Eric, great article. Very interesting perspective. Any insight or details into the upcoming transition to HD while you were there?

Could save some serious cash by broadcasting the international feed, minus US anaylsis!

“Americans have more access to soccer from around the world than in any other country on earth.”

Even more reason to get it right! While I am grateful for access to FSC’s games, their lack of research and cringeworthy habit of letting any old Tom, Dick and Harry have his say, needs addressing. It make’s FSC appear Amateur. Less John Doe’s and more ex-players!

I find it interesting, and annoying that many of the british audience believe that just because you are an american you are completely uninformed when it comes to the game. Those days are through, and thanks to channels like fsc many more americans are getting the opportunity to learn more about it. Sorry brits, but you are not the only fans who enjoy the game. So, have another meat pie, and another brew of your choice, and let us yanks enjoy some great programming from fsc!

I can’t tell – are they watching the matches in HD in their studio?

    John-
FSC will be broadcasting in HD starting in January. I assume Direct TV (which is owned by Fox) will pick up that feed the moment it is available and I suspect the other carriers with tons of bandwidth (U-Verse and Vios) will too. As for the rest of the cable suppliers, it will probably vary by company and region. My advise – start bugging your cable company now and don’t let up until it is on your dial.

    Martin –
They were not watching nay of the feeds on HD. Until they start importing the HD signal in January, we are all in the same boat.

As I said about the podcast and will add here again we all should gain a better appreciation of the job done by the staff at FSC.

Excellent article, Eric. And it gives an incredible insight into what goes into a typical Saturday at Fox Soccer Channel.

Regarding their pre-game show, Fox Soccer Match Day, I’ve always felt it was too rehearsed. Often, I watch the program and it feels like they’re reading from teleprompters. It’s that rehearsed. I really feel the show would get more viewers if it was less scripted and more natural. And if the atmosphere on the set was more relaxed instead of being so stiff.

The show is very polished. But too polished for my taste. The opposite is Paul Dempsey and Pat Dolan on Setanta Sports where it feels completely unrehearsed and more spontaneous.

One more thing, I watched today’s Champions League game between Real Madrid and AC Milan. And I was so pleased to see Warren Barton do some tactical analysis at half-time. This is what Fox needs to do more of. Elevate the analysis and talk up to their viewers. What Barton did was very educational and scholarly. I loved it.

    Cheers,
    The Gaffer

Best thing about them is the impact they have on young people. When I was growing up, got to see matches but learning the moves was tough… then there was club ball… but now my daughter and son sit and watch the best of the best… and hit rewind … and in HD. So it is going to have quite an impact on the next generation.

PLEASE!! I watch all the EPL games I can in Houston, TX. That means recording most of them each weekend (and Wednesdays, when they occur) on my DVR. I am very grateful for ESPN’s Saturday EPL Game of the Week, and I enjoy Ian Darke and Evan Ekoku, etc., but if I watch the ESPN game on my DVR first, I hear them give ALL the concurrent Premiere League Scores which I am in the process of recording — THUS SPOILING EVERYTHING I HAVE SET UP TO WATCH LATER!! I know you want to keep everybody current, but there must be others who also are intending to watch Saturday games later on DVR and would prefer NOT to hear the immediate outcomes. ANY SOLUTIONS, GUYS???

Failed to mention that the OTHER games are on FOX SOCCER CHANNEL in USA. Maybe they should get involved in this too, as it spoils their broadcasts for people like me.
