Blow for the Netherlands

by Andrew Morris on May 31, 2008 · 3 comments

Just after I pick the Dutch to win the Euros, here comes the news that winger Ryan Babel will miss the entire tournament after tearing ankle ligaments in training on Saturday.

Coach Marco van Basten has yet to name a replacement but will do so as soon as Babel’s injury is confirmed by a UEFA doctor.

Holland faces Italy on June 9th in their opening match of the tournament.

Holland was always going to struggle just to make it out of their group, and even though Babel wouldn’t have started, he would’ve been a key player to have coming off the bench.

I had a feeling that Babel would make a huge impact in this tournament and would gain valuable experience from it. Too bad, hopefully he’ll be fit for the beginning of the premiership season.

Not a massive fan of Babel but tactically he offered them flexibility. Good player potentially…i wonder who gets called up….
