Defoe is a done deal, hopefully Appiah will prove his fitness too.
As for Downing, sorry, but I just do not rate the guy at all. I'm friends with a Boro fan who loves him, but I've never seen him a great game. I'd rather Spurs went after Podolski and Petrov.
Defoe oddly isn't cup tied for the Carling Cup!

I never wanted Defoe to leave the Lane and if Levy knew of Berbatov's desire to leave last summer I still scratch my head wondering why he ever left. I'll wait and see on Downing. If the bid is much higher than 12 mill it probably wouldn't be worth it. Then again if it keeps Spurs from relegation…

That said, I hate to see Spurs put all their eggs in one or two baskets. I hope behind the scenes Spurs are also putting in a decent bid for Podolski from Munich. He's got great power and accuracy behind the ball and easily the strength for the EPL. Not to mention German players have a pretty good history of success playing for English clubs, not least of which has been for Spurs.

I think Downing is a long way from being a Spurs player. The Boro Chairman is insisting that no-one leaves, and the Spurs bids have been insultingly low for a player of Downing's quality. That's a big gap to close in a day or two.

I'm not saying it won't happen, just that it might run a bit from here, especially if another club steps in to muddy the waters.

As a Boro fan, my hope is either for a bidding war or than Downing can be convinced to stay until the summer at least.
