David Pleat also continously call the Czech Republic Czechoslavakia even though they peacefully split up in 1993 to forn the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

I agree that the general standard of commentary has been poor but you’ll never get a team of pundits that appeal to everyone.

Case in point: I don’t mind Shearer so much, and I quite enjoy Andy Townsend, but I dislike Martin O’Neill (mainly because he doesn’t so much interpret what he’s seen as try to come up with something funny to add to it).

Favourite on the BBC has to be Jonathan Pearce and on ITV, Jim Beglin.

Most annoying point during the competition so far (and this may just be a Scottish thing) was Harry Redknapp giving us his insight which, essentially, boiled down to how England would be seen as contenders along side Germany and the Netherlands (this after the first round of games) had they qualified for the tournament. Worst piece of “insightful” punditry I’ve had the misfortune to listen to for quite some time.

I would take anyone with a pulse over Motson. Lawrenson is pretty dire as well.

I was always a Barry Davies fan, never could stand Motson.

Thank you for touching on the point of Shearer (who isn’t the only one) praising the premiership teams who ‘strangled’ the life out of games this past season against Arsenal by simply ‘Doing an Italy’ and then actually berating the Italians for doing the same thing. They’re all anti-Arsenal cos we got so many foreigners and thats a FACT!!

The bias against both Arsenal and Chelsea in the British media is very striking to an outsider like me. Very transparent and quite poor journalism.

Downunder we get the ITV/BBC as well as Martin Tyler and another English bloke doing the SBS (free to air) commentary. BBC’s coverage has been good in my opinion. Pre tournament i knew how bad Shearer could be same with Lawro…so nothing that i had expected. Martin O’Neill is fantastic, Lee Dixon and Gavin Peacock do a brilliant job on MOTD. Oh i nearly forgot but the redhead and Desailly have done a nice job on the sidelines offering the view of a coach and an ex-player (esp during Frenchies games) close to the action. The Italy V Spain game both Lawro and Motson had shockers. Dani Geezer and Di Natalie…OMFG! TBH though i really have no qualms with BBC at all. They do some of the best analysis in general…

On the other hand ITV… having not seen much of their coverage BEFORE euros i came into it fresh. I don’t think Gary Neville is bad at all, some of the players brought on have brought a bit of insight to the table… Hamann not too bad The Townsend bloke is annoying……but wait for it…DAVID PLEAT IS THE WORST OF THE WORST! That guy spouts of stereotypes, sounds like his watching the game from the retirement home and states the bleeding obvious just with no ends.
