True enough, but this happened last year.

    Django,

The seeds of it were definitely planted last season, but Benitez was employing a lot more rotation in where he fielded players. Gerrard didn’t really take on this role consistently until this season after Rafa gave up on the potential of a Keane/Torres partnership. Now that Gerrard and Torres are both finally fit and playing their best (at the same time) we can see something significant and deadly truly take shape.

Yeah I just have to disagree…Blackburn, Chelsea (twice), Arsenal, Everton, United, Inter (twice), Newcastle, West Ham, Bolton, Middlesbrough…All fixtures from February 2008 to April 2008, all with Torres as the lone striker and Gerrard in support. I agree that being fit at the same time is a positive, but last season, particularly the last few months, saw this link-up as much more than a planted seed. Most of the rotation ended in February when Liverpool crashed out of the FA Cup to Barnsley, save for a few matches here and there (return leg v. Arsenal). At the end of the season he trotted out the show-ponies he wanted to sell (Crouch, Voronin) in the 4-4-2, but it seemed mostly like a sales pitch than a full-on first-choice eleven.

So in the next transfer who would best compliment Liverpools new style? I say David Silva.

Django, I take your point. I still think only recently can we call it a partnership, but this may be a matter of symantics. Rafa said this season he could see Gerrard eventually playing as an outright striker once his pace has waned. Perhaps we are beginning to see the beginning of that evolution now.

Matthew, I’ve been long fascinated with David Silva, and could have seen him coming to Liverpool in a versatile Benayoun-type role, but he didn’t really impress me as much as I thought he would in the Euro. Also, today Rafa debunked Silva rumours on Liverpool’s site.

If Liverpool go after a Valencia player I wonder if Joaquin may be a more suitable option. A natural right winger could be just the thing to flush out the Red attack. Kuyt could drop to the bench ready to come on as a forward or a winger depending on what the situation needs.
