If they let him be this anemic for this long in the Premiership, I don’t see why they will not give him a go in the Championship. They have an incredibly loyal owner and a good youth system so, I say he gets a year in the Championship before the club even contemplates hiring a new manager.

Southgate has been stuck with a lot of contraints, but at the same time he doesn’t seem quite up to the job of running a Premier League team.

BTW, Brad Jones has been the keeper for most of the season, not Ross Turnbull. I don’t think Schwarzer leaving was really Southgate’s decision. He just wanted more than Boro could offer. Schwarzer was pretty hopeless in his last season at Boro, not the keeper we’ve seen this year.

Marlon King’s arrest was when he was with Hull – nothing to do with Southgate or the Boro.

Turnbull has 22 appearances to Jones’ 15. Jones was to be the starter but missed a number of games through injury.

Emnes was bought with the future in mind and I think he’ll still be a valuable asset next season. He’s got loads of pace and I’ve been disappointed he hasn’t gotten a chance more often than Aliadiere. I do think there will be massive changes over the summer.

I could easily see Arca, Downing, O’Neil, Huth, Alves, Aliadiere, Pogatetz, Shawky, Mido and Tuncay all leaving the club to cut wages down or simply because they do not want to be playing Championship football. They should get good fees for Downing and Tuncay and a few quid for the rest. If that money can be wisely re-invested in some experienced heads to guide the young lads then maybe just maybe Boro will bounce back after a season.

Southgate has been the first to say the buck stops with him. He’s been working under financial constraints and I think he realizes better than any of us that Alves was a big mistake. However, I don’t think he’ll get fired after the season. Steve Gibson seems happy with him, if you can believe his comments to the media. I vacillated from wanting him fired to wanting him to stay on and continue developing the club’s youth players. Maybe he needs an assistant/consultant with more top flight coaching experience but I don’t know…it’s just idle speculation. A second opinion on the team certainly couldn’t hurt.

Ohh and Digard will probably want to leave as well. I’d be surprised if he stayed on. Decent player but will get scooped by one of the clubs coming up to the Premier League (Wolves or Birmingham) I suspect.
