The Italian squad has suffered a major scare today with the news that talismanic defender, Fabio Cannavaro, is having to seek hospital treatment on ankle injury received in training. Cannavaro was injured in an accidental clash with the full back Giorgio Chiellini. Reportedly, Italy’s doctor, Paolo Zeppilli said “We have to do tests but it does not look like a minor injury. The first thing we need assess is if there is any damage to the bones.” The Real Madrid defender has played 116 times for Italy in his long career.

I think this may be a blessing in disguise. Italy really need to blood some youngsters, especially at the back. I also think Cannavaro is very overrated and watching Real Madrid, he always looks prone to mistakes. He may be past it.

The world cup win definitely inflated his stock in the game. I still believe his performances at the world cup where phenomenal but playing in Spain perhaps has either shown his flaws or as wanderer put it indicated that he is past it. We saw how they dealt with an injury blow to Nesta (arguably better than Cannavaro) pre world cup and certainly Italy are not short of a few defenders. TBH i think their squad is the most complete of all the teams participating.
