Until I read this installment of Legends, I wouldn't have known that Clough was an excellent footballer in his day. As a Yank, I love learning about the history of the game post-war. Thanks Paul!

Brian Clough reminds me a lot of Bobby Robson in many ways. Both were accomplished footballers, but they'll be better known as football managers than footballers -- which is a shame really because their overshadows their playing careers.

Cheers,

No it wasn't. When Clough took over they were called Hartlepools.

From the history of Hartlepool United:

Derek Hall adds; 'All real Hartlepool fans nickname the club Pools (not The Pool). This goes back to the pre-1967 days when the boroughs of (old) Hartlepool and West Hartlepool became amalgamated as just Hartlepool. It was because of the existence of the two very separate towns that the club was actually called Hartlepools United in the first place. That said though, I'd prefer to see us called The Monkey Hangers!'

I convinced some of my friends to watch The Damned United with me, and they loved it. I thought it was great as well (and I know its fiction-based-on-fact), and I have the greatest respect for Clough as a player and a manager (more so as a player) now that I know his story.
