paul bestall,
i agree that all these teams preformed like chapionship teams on the last day of the season and all through the season and if there was 5 religation places in the premiership then they would have all gone down they all do deserve to go down with the way they have preformed in the devison this season and i dont blame ricky s for quitting sunderland . no offence to these teams but you are all at devison 2 level....

The issue with the bottom the 5 clubs this season was that none of them had gone on a recent run that inspired confidence within themselves. Usually someone goes on a run to try and give themselves a chance, but no-one did this year.
I wasn't surprised that they all lost, too many nerves and not enough quality, which gave us the end that we got.
Newcastle seemed resigned to their fate well before it happened, which must have been galling.

What a disappointing last round. All 4 threatened teams played against top 10 sides which had absolutely nothing to play for. United even pulled a third string team.
It seemed like the gap in quality is huge!...maybe the Premier League should relegate 4-5 teams. I don't think Hull/Sunderland, even Pompey deserved to stay up this season...Newcastle may just skip down a division and go to League 1: they are that bad!!!
Had high hopes, but it turned out to be an anticlimactic finish...Outside the top 4 (sorry Villa, the last 2 months you were disgustingly awful) the Premier League is no better than Holland, Russia, Germany, etc.
The Spanish Primera seems to have a much more balanced competition. Even the Bundesliga looks appealing after the awful football we saw today from the bottom teams in the Premier League...

The latest podcast spoke on how after the big 4 the Prem lacks quality. Today is a good example. How many teams "achieved" by losing. I love Fulham but losing 2-0 to Everton(a good squad) makes you fit for Europe? Hull celebrates a defeat because it stays up. Come on guys, if your Hull or Sunderland your not singing and rejoicing, your walking off with your head down and saying we have work to do. The futrue of the Prem calls for a change of attitude. Summer chat for all of us.

What surprises me more is that with the exception of Sunderland they all went with a whimper.

I'm stunned. Newcastle fails to get an equalizer and get relegated alongside Boro. Hull stay up.

Today sees the end of the Newcastle legacy. Ray Hudson must be devastated.

Thanks Paul for the live blog.

Is anyone else waiting for Shearer to rip off his suit and insert himself into the game to try and save the day. If I was him I would have put my name on the team sheet even though he hasn't played for a few years. I would have loved to have seen Shearer in his kit going down with the Magpie Ship on the pitch though I am going to giggle seeing him in his suit as a LOSER if his team can muster a goal to save themselves from the depths of the Championship.

Hey Gaffer how about my boy Nigel Adkins leading Scunthorpe up to the Championship today? I am telling you he has an interesting story to tell going from Team Physio to Manager to promotion then to relegation and finally promoted once again.
