In 1986, an English pop band named The Housemartins released their debut album entitled “London 0 Hull 4,” which perfectly summed up what the four northern lads thought of music from London as well as their contention that they were the fourth best band in Kingston Upon Hull.

The Housemartins were best known for their cover of the song, “Caravan Of Love.” After splitting, two of the band members went on to form The Beautiful South, while band member Norman Cook famously went on to reinvent himself as the now legendary Fatboy Slim.

While the London 0 Hull 4 album title was a way for the band to thumb their noses at the London music scene, little did the bandmembers know that they were predicting the future at the time. Twenty two years later, the mighty Hull City would achieve four historic wins against London sides:

  • Hull 2-1 Fulham, August 16, 2008
  • Arsenal 1-2 Hull, September 27, 2008
  • Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Hull, October 5, 2008
  • Hull 1-0 West Ham United, October 19, 2008.

Can Hull make it five wins against London sides when they play Chelsea at the KC Stadium on October 29th? The computer says no.

Maybe all this 2008 attention will get this album on iTunes. Earlier this year I wanted to put “Reverend's Revenge” on a mix CD I was making, and I couldn't find my copy of London 0 – Hull 4 (I suspect my wife, even though she always professed to like the H-Martins). I was shocked – shocked! – to see no Housemartins on iTunes.

Lol… I thought about this album a couple of weeks ago and lo and behold, here it is on EPL Talk. Everyone knows “Happy Hour” off this album, but “Sheep” was a good little pop song too.

After The Housemartins broke up, didn't one of the band members end up with one-hit wonder London Beat? (”I've Been Thinking About You”)
