Nice article. By the way..England failed to qualify for the last Euro largely because they DIDN’T play him, not because of him at all, he’s barely there in the team for the qualifiers. And playing Beckham just for the sake of playing Beckham was the moto of Sven Goran Erickson, not McLaren.

    Anyway, a very nice article.

    Thank you for the compliments.

I should clarify: my previous sentiments of dropping Beckham were not because he wasn’t performing well as an individual or didn’t have an important impact. I felt that way (at the time) because I thought getting young blood in the team was essential to England’s preparation for the future. Taking a gamble on young players to get them ready for 2010 was more important than relying on Beckham who I didn’t think (at the time) would still be able to play at the international level in 2010.

I did not mean to imply that failing to qualify for the Euros was in any way Beckham’s fault.

Beckham is the best right winger and many times the best english player on the park

The other young wingers have been given enough chances. They do not show any promise in the sense that they lack even a decent final ball..they are usually very wayward..ppl like puyol will own such players..lennon..walcott etc..it will only take beckhams raking crosses and cross field balls that will put such class defenders under pressure..lennon was not at all potent against slovakia and ukraine..the recent games..lennon is not a regular starter for arsenal..lennon plays against the lower teams but against the big 3 in england even he has suffered..no composure..just runs down the wing..beats defenders well..and then comes up with a usually poor final ball into the box

Just checked the Daily Star and there is no such article on Upson signing for Arsenal.

A little late for April Fools isn’t it.

Good article. Beckham still an play. Italy is the perfect place for him at this moment too. A slower, more technical game, where he has time and it’s not all about pace. I definately think he should be taken to South Africa.

Really though, if England is too have further success, I think a large part of it will have to be with Rooney and Gerrard interchanging on the left.

The way that has worked, maybe Joe Cole on the right?

This was very good, and had me smiling up until this comment:

    >”He won’t play Beckham for the sake of playing Beckham as McClaren so often did. He’ll follow the needs of the situation.”

“Fan” was right with his comment. It wasn’t an inference by you, but a statement which is in fact false. “Fan” nailed the truth.

You and “Fan” are correct, RRR. It was Sven and not McClaren who played Beckham for the sake of it. McClaren dropped him, but then brought him back perhaps due to public and media pressure when England’s results were dire and his job was in jeopardy.

The difference with Capello is the sense of balance I spoke about. Erikkson and McClaren went to extremes regarding Beckham. McClaren brought him back, not because it was the right tactical decision per se, but because he was in trouble and made a drastic shift in his approach to try and turn things around.

This young blood nonsense. I’m all for planning for the future but the future never comes. When it comes to international football, I believe you play the best players you have at the moment. Anyone that knows England knows that they – at some point during a match, will run out of ideas and when they do, as long as Beckham (who still the sweetest right foot in football) can still stand on one leg to whip a cross in for Terry or Ferdinand on a set piece, should be in the squad.
