RTE Mocks Setanta Sports With Sellotanta Sports Video

by The Gaffer on September 11, 2008 · 4 comments

RTE, the Irish broadcaster, has mocked Setanta Sports with a cheeky video featuring two comedians impersonating Setanta presenters Paul Dempsey and Pat Dolan.

Dempsey is a former Sky Sports reporter who was interviewed by EPL Talk in 2007. Dolan is a former Arsenal reserves footballer who currently manages a team in Ireland.

The skit was aired last night on RTE after the England versus Croatia match.

What are your thoughts about the video? Is it funny or is it RTE taking cheap shots at Setanta?

Sellotanta vs. Setanta.
In the words of Kevin Keegan “I will lovvvv it if they beat them”

Sellotanta def'n, from the two words, (cello)phane – regenerated cellulose in thin transparent sheets used especially for packaging, and the word tanta – a city of the Nile Delta.

cancelled my Setanta subscription last season, after experiencing the additional PPV charges for key matches.

Um… I didn't even crack a hint of a smile. Was this supposed to be funny?

Impressions were spot on. Close your eyes and it's them.

Deary me. This is part of the Apres Match strand that has been running for a decade or so. It used to be the funniest thing around, combining the uncanny impressions of Risteárd Cooper and Gary Cooke and the surrealism of Barry Murphy (who was absent in this sketch). It was at its peak at France '98 and Euro 2000, and also did a fine job with the golden material provide by the incidents in S****n in 2002, but it's long ago jumped the shark (then gone back and jumped it several more times, just to be sure). This is a prime example of how woeful it's become.
