That depends on what you call “contribution”. Is a contribution simply about goals and blocks. Or can contribution be something intangible like team spirit, morale, and leadership? I think players and managers are more in-tune with these type of contributions than viewers will ever be.

ryan giggs what has he done this season to deserve it…………….nothing, football is getting worse which idots vote for them.one player that has not had a mention is phil jagielka,he has been far the best player in the premier league this season.played every game this season for everton, broke into the england team and scored the penalty which put them into the fa cup final, hasnt put a foot wrong all season.plays every match with his heart on his sleeve, gives a 100% week in week out.

I thought it was scandalous that Giggsy landed it this season. There have been numerous occasions he has probably deserved it but no part of me can say that he has been the best player in the league this season. Surely Torres/Gerrard/Ronaldo/Lampard/Ferdininand and many more have been better players and therefore would have been more deserving of the award. I agree with Dean and Ethan, Jagielka should have been mentioned and Giggs could have taken home a merit award.

There is no rational defense for him winning the award this season. It would seem that priority number one would be that the player has actually played.

I agree that Giggs winning is outrageous – I thought Vidic was a shoe-in, but I guess nostalgia really does pay, right? Forget the league, was Giggs even the best Manchester United player this year? Ahead of Vidic, Rooney, Van der Sar, etc? Was he more impressive than Jagielka and Lescott? Gerrard?

It just doesn’t add up. Everyone loves to hate the media for their selections of “team of the year” but this time, the players have fouled up.
