In this series, an assertion will be made regarding an impacting topic in the Premier League. EPL Talk writers Matt Hackenmiller and Earl Reed each offer their views on whether the statement is “Fact or Fiction.”

Fact or Fiction: David Silva is Manchester City’s most important player.

MH: Fact. Although the forwards get most of the attention, Silva is the player that makes the City attack dangerous. The way that he is able to distribute the ball and find Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko in space is what makes this club go. Silva has created more goal scoring chances from open play than any other player in the Premier League this season. With the Carlos Tevez news this week, it seems that Silva will start to move into more of a leadership role for the club. Of all of the big name transfer signings over the past few seasons for City, it appears that the signing of David Silva has been the most significant.

ER: Fact. For one thing, I believe if David Moyes goes out of his way to man-mark you out of a match, I think it says something about your role. Silva was pestered in City’s recent victory over Everton by Jack Rodwell, and it was only after Everton had to chase an equalizer that Silva broke free to set up James Milner’s goal. The Blues still won, but with Silva clamped it put a damper on the attack. I think you will see Samir Nasri grow in importance as he beds in with the club, but for now Silva is the primary creative force in the front four for City. You take last season’s primary scorer: Tevez. This season: Dzeko and Aguero. David Silva is the common denominator in making these top quality forwards even better.

What do you think, is it fact or fiction that David Silva is Manchester City’s most important player?

The first installment of this season’s Manchester Derby takes place on Wednesday at Eastlands. Manchester United are coming off of a dramatic win at home where South Korean midfielder Ji-Sung Park bagged a brace with the winner coming very late on. It was one of those weekends in the Premier League where not only did United win, albeit not very convincingly, but also a weekend where teams either side of the Red Devils lost.

United will of course only be worried about their results, but Chelsea’s 0-2 loss at Anfield and Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle seems to have implemented a ‘top 2′ in the league. As far as the win v Wolves, United were far from their cohesive best as what was very close to a B squad experienced a myriad of problems in attempting to dispose of Wolves. Bebe was quite poor in midfield while Gabriel Obertan and John O’Shea, although decent on the day, failed to provide any real spark of creativity for United.

Manchester City are too coming off of a win. City traveled to the Hawthorns where they disposed of a West Brom side who’ve commited to playing football this season to the tune of some fine results. Summer signing Mario Balotelli proved a good buy when he too scored a brace for the Citizens. Balotelli also saw red in the game and will now serve a three match ban.

With Carlos Tevez back in the lineup, City will always pose a threat in attack. David Silva has been in scintillating form for the past month and with Balotelli now out, the possibility of a start for winger Adam Johnson could prove daunting for United’s defense.

As City continue to ambitiously spend an inordinate amount of money on new blood, each installment of the Manchester Derby grows in stature and anticipation. And just as City’s attack starts to congeal, so too does United’s defense began to instill that bit of confidence into the rest of the team.

On Wednesday, all eyes will be on Eastlands as the Manchester Derby is sure to thrill. So who takes the three points and the crown of Manchester’s finest?

In some fans’ and pundits’ opinion, Manchester City appears to be the team best equipped to challenge Chelsea for the Premier League title. But last Saturday 2-1 defeat at Wolves showed that despite all the talent there are evidently a few holes that need to be filled in. First credit must be given to Wolves who were outstanding and fully deserved their victory – coming back from a goal down after a soft penalty decision against (Richard Sterman) on David Silva, slotted away coolly by Abebayor. I am on the side of the fence that believes Wolves play very good football and have been mislabelled as a physical football team.

Manchester City has two major concerns, in midfield and upfront.

Case 1: midfield: for all the talent it possesses, the three-man midfield last Saturday of Barry, Milner and Ya-Ya Toare were simply leaving full-backs Micah Richards & Jerome Boateng exposed again. Two direct and talented wingers in the in-form – Matt Jarvis and Stephen Hunt – led in wide areas to provide service to Edwards and Doyle. Proof of that were both of Wolves’ goals as first Jarvis and then Hunt had enough time and space to have tea and biscuits before providing the delivery.

Case 2: Attack: This is where City are still to find the right partnership. Without Tevez, City look lightweight upfront without a real striker with the predatory instincts that he possesses. Abebayor will have his moments of brilliance but more often than not frustrates, as with Balotelli; he is finding his feet and fitness and requires time to establish himself in the Premier League after his Jekyll (first half) and Hyde (second half) performance. Abebayor and Balotelli were not on the same wavelength for the match, running into same areas and not appearing to show a partnership together, City’s can only hope that Tevez’s return is speedy as otherwise this minor dip in form could have disastrous concequences.

I would like to see City play with two natural wingers (in Milner and Johnson), with Silva playing in the ‘hole’ behind Tevez (or at present Adebayor) to provide them better balance in wide areas and protection for the exposed areas at full backs – especially on the left, a position where City have employed 8 different team members already this season.

With some fine-tuning in midfield and upfront – something that will surely be corrected in the January transfer window – City will prove to be a side to challenge for the title, but they still have plenty to learn.

They say the sign of a good side is winning when you’re not playing well. If that is the case then Roberto Mancini’s Manchester City could be a real challenger for the Premier League this season after grinding out another result, this time a one goal advantage as City won 3-2 at Premier League new-boys Blackpool.

It’s not the first time this season that City have demonstrated their title credentials by winning a game that in truth they probably didn’t deserve to. Ian Holloway’s side were much then a match for City, but goals from Carlos Tevez and David Silva were eventually enough to see off the spirited Seasiders.

City’s goalscorers demonstrate just how much quality Mancini has at his disposal. In my opinion there would be no manager in the Premier League that wouldn’t trade his squad with that of the Italians.

The strength in depth that City have is unbelievable, and while there may be other teams have stronger starting line-ups, Mancini really does that many options from the bench which really give City a chance of winning the Premier League this season.

City’s key man is Tevez, if he got injured Mancini would look for Emanuel Adebayor or Silva to step in to his shoes. If you look at Manchester United or Chelsea, they simply don’t have anywhere near as much depth to their squads.

I don’t know if City will go on to win the league, but I certainly feel that this season will bring some form of success. I think success for them will represent a title challenge, which in turn could bring help bring the long term success that wealthy owner Sheikh Mansour desperately craves.

Not only will a title challenge give the club a Champions League spot, which would be crucial in their bid to attract the big name signings, but it would also act a real boost to the clubs general demeanor. While there is a real sense of positivity around the club, there is now a need to push for the big honours to keep the momentum going.

But the immediate sings are looking very good for Mancini and with key players like Mario Balotelli still to come back from injury things could only get better for the blue half of Manchester. However the big tests are still ahead for Mancini’s men starting with the visit of Arsenal next weekend.

Emphatic Wins in their Infancy

While two massively different matches played out to identical score-lines on Saturday, the meaningful implications associated with those 1-0 wins by Manchester City and West Ham United may go somewhere over the rainbow in defining the seasons of the victors.

While Roberto Mancini got his formation and personnel spot on in what ended up being a fantastically entertaining chess match between two of English football’s biggest spenders, it was a moment of inscrutable profit that led to the difference maker. Equal parts luck and precision led to Carlos Tevez finding the break through in the 59th minute when his determined run from the halfway line set up the winner which oddly enough found an avenue between the legs of Ashley Cole and then a loving smooch off the post.

Largely a match where defenses dominated the proceedings, somehow, again, it was Tevez for City who proved the catalyst. Although the team Carlo Ancelotti fielded in Chelsea’s midweek Carling Cup loss to Newcastle was entirely different to the XI who took the field at Eastlands, the Champions have now lost two in a row after their boisterous start.

West Ham United won a football match played on a pitch of grass in the League for the first time this season when Frederic Piquionne found the net with a hard fought and well won header. Saturday’s West Ham wasn’t the team of the first five weeks of the Premier League. They played with more purpose in the derby with Spurs, defended well and showed ambition. West Ham are taking baby steps in the League which resemble something along the lines of L-L-L-L-D-W. It was the win on Saturday that pulled them out of 20th by only a point, while baby steps sooner or later turn into strides.

This allegory concludes with Manchester City fans humming “Hey, Chelsea, City we got your number time to worry” to the tune of Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s Got Your Money (having taken 9 points from the last 3 matches) while the Irons, in pursuit of stabilization, breathe a heavy hearted sigh of relief at the site of their first 3 points. Two clubs at different horizons win by the slimmest of margins while those 1-0′s could prove most emphatic in the infancy of their respective seasons.

Plucky Draws, Impressive West Brom and Equally Unimpressive Manuel Almunia

The two big North West clubs failed to produce inspired football in drawing to inferior opponents. Credit to Bolton and Sunderland for playing organized and determined football while talismanic figures such as Wayne Rooney and Fernando Torres continue to search for their best form. Neither looked 100% fit while many hope Roy Hodgson’s tactics somehow ‘click’ with time. Manchester United’s failings shouldn’t cause too much concern, yet it was Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, two of United’s early season best, who failed to make an impact on the match.

It’s been said time and time again that Arsenal keeper Manuel Almunia isn’t quite good enough to play for Arsenal if they have ambitions of silverware. I’ve always agreed with this sentiment. Almunia was largely responsible for West Brom’s second and third when his shoot stopping abilities and positional awareness failed him, again. Gonzalo Jara scored when Almunia let his low, hard shot from the right edge of the penalty area skip over his hands. For West Brom’s third, Almunia left the goal mouth wide open for Jerome Thomas when he mistakenly ran out for a ball Chris Brunt was well onto. Questions have to soon be asked of Almunia or Arsenal will surely suffer the error of his ways until he’s dropped.

Honorable Mentions -

Dedryck Boyata, Manchester City – As a colleague and I discussed the potential set up, match ups and difference makers on Friday in anticipation of Saturday’s clash, the one re-occuring theme in our pre game analysis was Chelsea’s Ashley Cole and just how dangerous the Champions could be attacking down the left. At some point in the discussion, one of us ended up spot on as Chelsea overwhelmingly favored the left side as their avenue towards goal in the first half. Enter Boyata at right back for Manchester City.

As Roberto Mancini struggled with a selection headache as injuries plagued the squad, it was the young Belgian defender who got the nod at right back. Tough would be his duties on the day as Ashley Cole and Florent Malouda continually picked at Boyata yet he stood firm. As an even-keeled matched played out like a heavyweight fight, City’s defense held strong and for long stretches were barely tested by Chelsea’s once poignant but now somehow stuttering attack. Credit to the young Boyata for a mature defensive performance against some of the league’s best attackers.

Victor Obinna, West Ham – Obinna’s strike partner Frederic Piquionne scored the winner yet Obinna also impressed leading the line for West Ham during their first win of the season. The on loan from Inter Milan winger scored his first goal for West Ham during their mid week Carling Cup victory away to Sunderland and was key for West Ham on Saturday as the Hammers dominated early spells of the match. Obinna held the ball well and was a true attacking threat when West Ham were in possession. He’s a strong, powerful striker with International experience in the form of the Nigerian national team. If he fits in well at Upton Park, West Ham have an option to buy him from Inter at the end of the season and would do well to keep him if they can avoid any additional major drops in form.

David Silva, Manchester City – Silva was effective for City in a right-ish, roaming attacking role. As Carlos Tevez did what he does best, Silva contributed to City’s forwards movements with his accurate passing and runs off the ball. In review of Tevez’s winner, which was a brilliant bit of skill, it was also Silva who matched pace with the Argentine. As Silva filled the space to Tevez’s left to pull John Terry with him, Tevez was able to take Ashley Cole 1 on 1 and finish. The move was largely successful due to Tevez and his determination, yet Silva did his part in keeping Terry busy. Silva’s ‘activity’ was enough to trouble Chelsea as City went onto to the 1-0 win. His slow settling into English football comes as a welcome relief to City fans as they pursue a top 4 finish.

Premier League Footballer of the Week -

Jerome Thomas, West Bromwich Albion – Thomas produced a man of the match performance for the Baggies who were involved in the shock result of the weekend. Few predicted a win for West Brom at the Emirates while even fewer predicted they’d score three goals against the Gunners. Thomas started on the left side of midfield, assisted on one and scored another with some impressive attacking movements. On more than one occasion, Thomas blew past Bacary Sagna, a decent enough right back, and was at the right place at the right time to finish a move he was heavily involved in setting up. The lead commentator of the match was correct in his assessment after Thomas (formerly of Arsenal) scored stating, “Jerome Thomas bites the hand that used to feed him“.

As they approach, once again, the 100 million pound mark in the transfer market, Manchester City and head coach Roberto Mancini still find facets of their team to dislike. Yet, for a team still searching for a striker to add to an already formidable attack, much respect is already deserved to what appears to be the most dangerous attacking third in the Premier League.

For title-winning clubs in the Premier League, the magic number of points is about 90. For the Citizens, not only is 90 a desire in the category points, but a high aim to shoot for in the category of goals scored. While Chelsea managed to hit the back of the net 103 times in 2009, City mustered up a total of 73, six behind fourth place finisher Tottenham. The unwritten answer may appear as a necessity of a more formidable defense, but for Sheikh Al-Mansour, the answer to defensive mishaps is millions of pounds worth of pure shot-firing, free-kick taking, goal scoring material.

With the likes of World Cup winner David Silva added and Robinho back in the squad that so eagerly marooned him last January, a strong attack once helmed by Mark Hughes’ brainchild Craig Bellamy and Sven Goran-Erikkson’s favorite overpriced Brazilian Jo now places the two strikers likely on their way out riding the bench, and possibly not making Mancini’s 25-man registered team.

Depth is something never lacking in a strong team, and the new look City team speaks nothing but the same. Starting with Emmanuel Adebayor and Carlos Tevez up front, who combined last year to score 43 goals for the Blues, more than half of their total goals in Premier League competitions. If three or even four men are preferred for Mancini’s tactical mind, or maybe just the scarf has been cutting of the circulation, the likes of Roque Santa Cruz, Robinho, and even Silva who has never hesitated to play up front all wait for their cracks at goal. Silva, who played few minutes for Spain in the World Cup campaign, came over to Eastlands for 30 million pounds, but this time plans on not letting himself be outshined by the likes of David Villa, who outscored him at Valencia in 2009, as well as in South Africa. With a determined Silva, a punishing Bellamy, and rejuvenation seasons from Santa Cruz and Robinho, the attack will be more dominant than ever.

At City, versatility is a key in the strength to attack. As is becoming the trend in most of European football, Mancini prefers to play a game with wingers on their opposite sides and the usual one or two strikers. Most often, an attacking midfielder will end up in the middle, in front of powerhouse defensive midfielder (and dropkick extraordinaire) Nigel de Jong and now the Premier League’s newest brother combination, the Toures. For the most part, that position is filled by the likes of Gareth Barry, but it seems there is hope for the likes of Stephen Ireland after strong preseason performances, and the acquisition of Villa’s James Milner still could be lying in the waits, as Martin O’Neil’s midfield slowly migrates its entirety to the blue side of Manchester. From the inside spreads wide where the depth and strength of the title hopefuls exemplifies itself even further. Adam Johnson, Shaun Wright-Phillips, and Vladimir Weiss fill the wings in, while preseason looks and prior remembrance shows Mancini’s willingness to play Robinho, Bellamy, Ireland, and Silva (his natural position, nonetheless) out wide feeding the ball back inside to duly nicknamed Carlos “Energizer bunny” Tevez and Emmanuel “Fear my goal celebrations” Adebayor. The fun isn’t done there for City, though.

In recent weeks and months, many a name has been thrown around the transfer mill at Eastlands, the most promising of those including Inter Milan wonderkid Mario Balotelli, Don Garber’s favorite lover Landon Donovan, Fernando Torres, and the one last name I can’t pronounce in Wolfsburg’s Edin Dzeko. The possibility of adding the talents of one of the above to an already formidable attack could put City over the top. With those additions plus the likes of an improving come January, the power of an attacking Manchester City could provide a shock in this year’s Premier League.

Yesterday I had a short conversation on Twitter with EPL Talk’s very own Laurence McKenna that went something like this:

lozcast: Mascherano = £25m? Milner = £25m+? Discuss

JesseChula: @lozcast Milner=versatile, can play either wing or in the middle, young. Masch=solid, likes to kick people. Ya know, get stuck in.Seems fair

lozcast: @JesseChula Still don’t get the valuation difference. Masch is…! Milner is good, best in his ‘position’ in the world? Not sure…

JesseChula: @lozcast is Masch best in world in his position? De Jong, Cambiasso, Busquets??

The debate really could have gone on and on, but McKenna’s points got me thinking about the valuation of James Milner compared to that of the captain of Argentina and then further, his value compared to that of other big names that have completed a transfer this summer. The open transfer window always brings stories of over-priced players, but how close is the £25m price tag placed on Milner to being a fair assessment of what he’s actually worth?

Milner looks set to finally leave Aston Villa after suitors Manchester City seem willing to up their bid for the 24 year old England international. But is Milner’s English-ness a large contributor to his potentially over-inflated transfer fee City look set to pay? Let’s face it, good to above average English players will always go for around the same price that good to great foreign players will go for simply because they aren’t a dime a dozen and every Premier League club wants at least a few.

Originally, City bid some £18m plus an extra payment of £2m later on only to be rejected by Aston Villa as too low a bid for their prized midfielder – a classic case of the club who owns the player holding out for more dough because they know they can get it.

Equally, Inter Milan are bidding for the services of Javier Mascherano from Liverpool who set the bar high at £30m with Inter looking closer to the £20m mark to secure Mascherano’s services. All variables point to the two clubs meeting somewhere in the middle. As McKenna stated on Twitter, the two midfielders could end up going for close to the same amount.

Of course we know the two midfield players are largely different in what they bring to their respective teams. Mascherano is a deep lying, defensive midfielder who’s good in the tackle and an effective protector of the back four. Milner is most comfortable as an attacking winger dribbling down the flanks and crossing the ball into the box. Yet he can also play in the center of the pitch in a more attacking role and can score goals. The two are separated by only 2 years in age and are both experienced Premier League and International players. So which one is really worth more? Or, is it even possible to tell?

A like for like comparison of the two players just doesn’t work, and which player could benefit his new side more than the other depends on more than just that one player – it depends on the supporting cast, the system, tactics, etc. In order for McKenna and I to settle our conversation, we must look at some recent activity in the transfer market this summer to make a realistic comparison and find middle ground.

As of press time, the most expensive Premier League transfer of the summer has been the signing of YaYa Toure by Manchester City from Barcelona for £28m, second is David Silva from Valencia also to City for £24m, which means Milner could go to the Citizens for almost the exact same fee as World Cup winner David Silva, or if Aston Villa up their asking price, Milner could go for close to what City payed Barcelona for their Champions League winning defensive midfielder, Toure.

When put in that kind of perspective, McKenna’s original point on Milner’s value seems closer to the truth than I originally thought. However, wouldn’t worth simply be defined as how much a certain club is willing to pay for a player?

This, however, can be dissected in two ways. First off, as previously stated, McKenna could be correct in his theory that he thought the £25m was simply too much for Milner. This would be a likely outcome if the issue was simply black and white with no gray area to contend with.

The second and more likely outcome to the debate would be that due to City’s willingness to throw what cash they need to in order to get their man, they’ve unknowingly tainted and inflated the transfer market during the summer. This is simply transfer market 101 and has been repeated time and time again since the Premier League’s inception. Clubs realize City’s intentions to punch high above their weight in buying up numerous players, they’ll therefore hold out for more cash because they know City have it to spend.

Regardless of your opinion, the next few days and weeks will likely tell us exactly what Milner is worth – which again, I believe to be exactly whatever the club buying him value him at, regardless of if we think it’s over-inflated.

Am I prepared to place Milner’s name in with Toure and Silva? Well, maybe not just yet, but with his Premier League experience, attacking flair and ever growing potential, he could just be up there with Mascherano.

Who will be in at Old Trafford this summer?

With the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo adding £80 million to Sir Alex Ferguson’s usual £25-30 million yearly budget. A summer spending spree is surely on the cards. Looking at the side, it would appear to me a winger and some quality in centre midfield are needed, with possibly, a striker as the icing on the cake.

Looking at the players linked to Old Trafford, it would seem we have some familiar names.

Luis Antonia Valencia – £15-18 Million

Luis Antonio Valencia

A flying right-winger has player over 80 games for Wigan and looks a very tidy player. His premier League experience will mean he can fit right into the side and wont need much time to settle. Nominated for the Best Young Player at the 2006 World Cup it appears the 23 year old who has 34 caps for Ecuador has a bright future. Some downsides may be the size of the fee, and doubts as to whether or not he is better than what United already have. In addition, his goal scoring record is quite woeful with only 7 goals during his time at Wigan and only 4 for Ecuador, he does have potential, but I only see him as a squad player at most. Wigan Chaiman Dave Whelan will not stand in his way and Sir Alex is a long time admirer, this transfer is pretty much nailed on.

Franck Ribery – £40-50 Million

Franck Ribery

A world-class player, a player, who would be the ideal replacement for the departing Cristiano Ronaldo. Apparently United put in a £60 million bid a few months ago and Sir Alex is keen to have him as part of the Old Trafford set up. His abilities are unquestioned, great dribbler, pace and immense skill, he also added goals to his repertoire scoring 14 in all competitions this season. Bayern have stated they would not keep him against his will and he has stated his desire to play in Spain. United would have a fight on their hands to persude him his future lies in Manchester, added to the hefty fee; Barcelona and Real Madrid are also circling thus increasing the price further.

Karim Benzema – £30-40 Million

Karim Benzema

The next great French striker in my opinion, and at 21 years old has plenty of time on his side. A seasoned Champions League performer, 24 caps for France and over 50 goals for Lyon in two seasons. He is tall, powerful and strong yet possesses pace coupled with a deadly eye for goal. Lyon have said he is not ‘untransferable’ and Ferguson has had an eye on him for years. The only issue would be his intention to stay in France during a World Cup year to maintain his place for Les Bleus.

David Silva – £30-35 Million

David Silva

A player I like a lot, he has pace, skill, vision, great technical ability and a lethal shot on him. Part of Spain’s Euro 2008 winning team he can play on either flank and behind the strikers. With Valencia harbouring a mountain of debt and in dire need to sell, Silva’s days are numbered at the Mestalla. Ferguson bid for him last summer and another attempt appears to be on the horizon, but with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Liverpool all interested, competition will be fierce for el Chinito. For me he would be an excellent addition and should be pursued vigerously.

David Villa – £35-40 Million

David Villa

If a well-known brewer made strikers they would probably make David Villa. As with his namesake Silva, his days at Valencia appear to be numbered due to the moeny he would bring in to help clear debts. A fantastic goal scorer and leader of the Spanish front line, a transfer to Real Madrid collapsed last season and it could be the same again this season. Although it looks far more likely he will remain in Spain, Chelsea and Liverpool have both announced interest but United have apparently put in a cheeky bid. Villa would add some much needed goals previously brought to the Stretford End by Ronaldo. A transfer to United however, seems just out of reach.

Mirko Vucinic £20-25 Million

Mirko Vucinic

The 25 year old Montenegrin currently ply’s his trade for AS Roma. This season having established himself as Roma’s number one striker, he has scored a number of important goals including two against Chelsea in the Champions League. With an impressive record of 48 goals in 83 games for the Giallorossi, he seems ready to step up another level and play for a top European club. Along with his excellent finishing ability he is also versatile, playing as a left-winger, and behind the striker during his time in Rome. Coupled with Roma’s lack of Champions League football and huge debts, it may be time to cash in on a very saleable asset.

Douglas Maicon – £30-35 Million

Douglas Maicon

The Inter right back is arguably the best in the business. He controls the right side, from corner to corner, strong in the tackle and great positional sense; he bombs forward with consummate ease to deliver a phenomenal quantity of crosses. Athletic and agile, he could be the answer on the right side. Sir Alex tried to sign him in 2003 but was refused a work permit. Reportedly unhappy in Italy, a move appears ever closer for the Brazilian.

Honourable mentions must go to Victor Valdes of Barcelona and Douglas Costa of Gremio. Both have been on the radar but I don’t see any developments in the near future at least.

Every one of the above has been linked with Manchester United at some point over the last few weeks. For me a ball winning midfielder should be high on the list of priorities though the rumour mill seems obsessed with attacking players.

A very eventful summer could come into fruition very soon and you may well find a few new faces strutting their stuff in the Theatre of Dreams.
