Nike’s CTR360 Trequartista AG Boots/Cleats Product Review

Nike is a relative newcomer to the boot game. What Nike has lacked in substance they’ve usually made up in style. Their autumn ad campaign channels Irvine Welsh’s finest prose by asking us to choose; choose control, choose speed, choose accuracy, choose touch or choose 5-a-side. I chose control, specifically Nike’s CTR360 Trequartista AG. Trequartista; can a pair of boots invoke the continental flair of a Zizou or Francesco Totti? Just Do It. Or, as Cesc Fabregas would say, “Bon Appetit.”

If a typical Addidas, Umbro, or Diadora boot represents the understated beauty of a Kristen Stewart, then Nike counters with the vibrant vivaciousness of a Scarlett Johansson. The appropriate soccer shoe for each player will, of course, be determined by their level of play and playing surface. But style is universal. The CTR360s are sleek and are offered in striking color combinations. My pair came in black and red, reminiscent of a Ferrari Testarossa. As is standard for this line, there is no overhanging tongue over the laces. The unusual studding provided solid traction when zig-zagging up and down the pitch. Designed for artificial turf, I found these boots, short of mud, to be quite versatile on a variety of natural grass pitches. More serious players will want to use them solely for their intended purpose.

There was no break-in period as they felt fine from the get-go. Nike has pioneered this fresh-out-the-boxness through such upper materials as “Kanga-Lite.” Part ‘roo, part science, all-smooth. Usain Bolt-wannabes may prefer the Mercurial line, but the Trequartista still weighs in around a feathery 10.4 ounces. Their profile is sufficiently low to the earth; while angled lacing means more surface area for a superior first touch and feel.

Padded pods on the front and side further make the Trequartistas ideal for those seeking better control. There’s a softness to Nike’s new line that makes them more comfortable while still providing the rigidity and support necessary for a full force game. As a casual player I certainly enjoyed the advantage that greater surface area for touch affords as opposed to my run-of-the-mill pair.

The CTR 360 line is a game-changer for Nike. The Nike CTR 360 Trequartista is an excellent mid-level boot, and a good value between the seemingly delicate works of art found in the high-priced range and entry-level kicks. And while no pair of boots can turn an ordinary player into a Zidane or Fabregas, it doesn’t hurt to look good surging forward in a flashy pair of Nikes.

Is This Man United’s New 09/10 Away Shirt?

There have been several different versions of Man United’s new away shirt floating around the Internet, including even a video of a Photoshopped shirt.

Now a new picture of the Manchester United away shirt in question has been revealed. The retro design is on purpose. The shirt is a tribute to the 1909 shirt that Man United won the FA Cup title in 100 years ago.

The shirt features an old fashioned collar, a red V on the front and the Saudi Telecom logo who are being touted as a potential sponsor of Manchester United to replace AIG.

New Man United Home Shirt

Man United’s new home shirt for the 2009/2010 season will be red with a white ‘V’ on the front, designed and manufactured by Nike.

Pictured above, the shirt is a tribute to the Manchester United shirt worn in the 1909 FA Cup Final which United won. Albeit the shirt design is a reverse of what Man United wore a 100 years ago.

There is a question whether the shirt pictured is a fake or not. The color surrounding the team badge is a darker red than the shirt, so it’s quite possible it could be a bad Photoshop job. Thanks to Football Shirts for the tip.

New Manchester United Away Shirt: 09/10 Season

Watch the video below to see an artist’s rendition of what the 09/10 Manchester United away shirt will look like. It’s a tribute to the Manchester United side that won the 1909 FA Cup Final 100 years ago.

The design mockup is a lot more appealing than the original shirt design from 1909 (see above link). But one thing I notice with the design mockup below is that the ‘V’ sign points directly to the sponsor’s name. So much so, in fact, that it makes the sponsor’s name stand out even more as if the whole intention of the design is to point the viewer’s attention to the AIG name (AIG’s sponsorship of Man United is set to expire in May 2010).

New 09/10 Manchester United Home Shirt

Manchester United’s new home shirt for the 2009/2010 season will be red with a large white v-shape sash down the front. Manufactured by Nike, the new shirt is a tribute to the Manchester United side that won its first FA Cup 100 years ago in the 1909 FA Cup Final when they beat Bristol City 1-0.

The shirt worn by United in the 1909 FA Cup Final was white with a large red v-shape sash down the front (pictured), but for the 2009/2010 Manchester United home shirt, the colors will be reversed.

The 1909 shirt worn by Manchester United was the brainchild of legendary United winger Billy Meredith. Before the 1909 FA Cup Final, it was realized that Man United and Bristol City had very similar football kits, so Meredith – who doubled as the club’s kit supplier and ran a sports shop – created the white shirt with red v-shape sash, and the rest is history.
