To be fair, Newcastle played some of their best and most inspired football against Man United and Arsenal. They really gave it a go, but came up short. Arsenal took the lead with 10 Newcastle players on the field and Bassong out of the match. Once S.Taylor went out (who I’m very critical of), that left them very thin at the back with Colocinni and Beye in the center.

Hopefully we don’t see the unlethal combo of Martins and Owen up front alone. Lovenkrands has brought pace and energy to the front which Owen clearly lacks.

The thought of Newcastle going down, while negative teams like Stoke and Blackburn stay up is frustrating.

To be fair, after a couple weeks of conditioning, Alan Shearer would be the best player on Newcastle.

    They’re just that bad.

Did I say that I felt they were a midtable club? Hell no, just that they have more quality than the other relagation fodder like West Brom, Blackburn, Stoke, Bolton…it’s the chemistry that has been rubbish and that falls on the manager (or lack thereof) and the ownership. They have made some decent purchases (Nolan, Colocinni, Bassong, Jonas), but it’s the old guard of guys like Owen, Ameobi, Butt that have brought the overall quality down.

To your point though, Shearer would have scored that penalty that Martins missed so badly against Arsenal without any conditioning. It was that bad.
