I could get behind that idea Grant.

Would also balance out the horrible lopsidedness of UEFA dumping Champions League losers into the UEFA Cup halfway through.

Why don't UEFA make winning the cup more lucrative for the clubs. For example if winning the UEFA cup meant you automatically went into the group phase of the Champions league I am sure more of the teams would be trying harder.

You could also take it one step further and say the runner up goes into the 3rd qualifying round with the 2 losing semi-finalists going into the second qualifying round. This would creat a lot more competition to get that far and then its just a matter of the further you go, the better chance you have of that lucrative Champions League payout.

Villa and Spurs wanted out obviously, but City is fielding full strength squads with Premiership matches a few days away. If they win the UEFA Cup it would be a good way to salvage this season where too much was expected of them (and too soon).

Agree that English clubs have treated the UEFA Cup disrespectfully, but honestly don't think the tournament has suffered as a result.

What I love about the UEFA Cup is that it's the exact opposite of the Champions League.

Because the smaller clubs take it more seriously than clubs like Villa/Spurs (who, to be fair, both have exceptional reasons this year) we get to watch clubs we're not too familiar with (like Zenit last season) as opposed to the same old same old we get in the CL.
