Thoughts on England v Belarus match

it007112a Thoughts on England v Belarus matchA slow week for good posts, largely because I’ve been spending most nights writing article after article for the next issue of the EPL Talk Magazine.

Thankfully I’ve been able to continue writing with one eye on my laptop, and the other eye on the television. For example, watching today’s England v Belarus friendly on Fox Soccer Channel.

What impressed me the most was the venom in the English attacks as Aaron Lennon completely tore past defenders down the right wing. What’s sad, though, is that Lennon won’t get a chance to play on the right wing during the World Cup unless he comes on as a sub or if Beckham gets injured.

This is one of the reasons why I believe both England and Brazil will be hampered during this summer’s World Cup. A national team manager who doesn’t have the chutzpah to bench his famous but not-in-form players is destined for failure. Brazil will be “forced” into playing the past-their-sell-date Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos. And England will play Beckham no matter what.

It seemed to me like England had the zip early in the match but everything went down hill after the injury to the goalkeeper and the goal. (well from the little I saw of the match and highlights).

Personally I think Gerrard should be the captain. Beckham hasn’t impressed me that much as a captain. I still think he should start though. If he can supply some good crosses hopefully Crouch can get on the end of them. If all else fails then definitely bring on Lennon to spice it up. He’s got good pace. Just my thoughts from the little I’ve seen of Lennon though.

By the way I’m looking forward to the next issue of EPL Talk magazine. It’s been a while. hehe.

In addition to the past-their-prime Beckham, Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos, Landon Donovan should be added to the list. If Donovan continues to unimpress, will US manager Bruce Arena have the cajones to put him on the bench?
