EPL logoWhile the 07/08 Premier League season has been a success on the pitch, it’s also done exceedingly well off the field with massive attendances and very few empty seats:

  • 13,384,880 people attended Premier League matches this season
  • Average attendance as a percentage of capacity equaled 90.23%
  • Average attendance was 35,223
  • Average capacity was 39,039

The 2007/2008 season has been a success not only for the Premier League but also its clubs, most of all Arsenal who narrowly filled more seats as a percentage of their capacity than Manchester United. Here’s how the top 20 ended (numbers show total number of people attended matches, average attendance, capacity and average attendance as a percentage of capacity):

  1. Arsenal – Emirates Stadium, 1,141,335, 60,070, 60,432, 99.40%
  2. Manchester United – Old Trafford, 1,438,136, 75,691, 76,212, 99.32%
  3. Tottenham Hotspur – White Hart Lane, 683,370, 35,967, 36,247, 99.23%
  4. West Ham United – Upton Park, 657,423, 34,601, 35,089, 98.61%
  5. Newcastle United – St James’ Park, 974,743, 51,302, 52,387, 97.93%
  6. Chelsea – Stamford Bridge, 786,549, 41,397, 42,449, 97.52%
  7. Reading – Madejski Stadium, 448,115, 23,585, 24,200, 97.46%
  8. Derby County – Pride Park, 616,216, 32,432, 33,597, 96.53%
  9. Portsmouth – Fratton Park, 378,367, 19,914, 20,688, 96.26
  10. Liverpool – Anfield, 827,111, 43,532, 45,362, 95.97%
  11. Aston Villa – Villa Park, 760,560, 40,030, 42,719, 93.71%
  12. Fulham – Craven Cottage, 451,714, 23,774, 25,600, 92.87%
  13. Everton – Goodison Park, 702,142, 36,955, 40,170, 92.00%
  14. Manchester City – City Of Manchester Stadium, 800,400, 42,126, 47,300, 89.06%
  15. Sunderland – Stadium Of Light, 823,540, 43,344, 49,000, 88.46%
  16. Birmingham City – St. Andrews, 497,438, 26,181, 30,009, 87.24%
  17. Blackburn Rovers – Ewood Park, 454,928, 23,944, 31,367, 76.34%
  18. Middlesbrough – Riverside Stadium, 507,450, 26,708, 35,049, 76.20%
  19. Wigan Athletic – JJB Stadium, 361,876, 19,046, 25,023, 76.11%
  20. Bolton Wanderers – Reebok Stadium, 397,122, 20,901, 27,879, 74.97%

The Premier League’s success with attendances should continue next season. Both West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City will have impressive attendances next season. West Brom’s capacity at The Hawthorns is 28,003. Stoke City’s capacity at the Britannia Stadium is 28,323.

Watching games mostly on Fox Soccer, this is one big difference I’ve noticed between EPL and Serie A. The closest sport I see in the US to English Football is college football, especially in the southern US.

College Football is probably the best comparison to not just the EPL but all of English Football. Everyone big and small has a team. A few big teams dominate, but everyone is involved in some conference or league that they can win.

A local USA note on English football. My local paper the Chicago Tribune had the tables for both the EPL and The Championship today as well as a article on the EPL final action of 2008. This is a great middle American conservative paper giving ink to English football. Enough said!
