Trix and Flix haunt my dreams…

May 8th, 2008 By Andrew Morris · 7 Comments

For those of you who are unaware, Trix and Flix are the mascots of Euro 2008.  While clicking through the tournament’s homepage for a few hours the other day, I came across these two lovable characters in an animated music video featuring the musical stylings of Shaggy.  Yes, Shaggy.  I’m not quite sure how he ties into European soccer, but he has “teamed up” with the mascots to help them “spread their passion to parts of the world they cannot visit in person.”  Fantastic.

On a much more serious note, we are 30 days away from the opening game between Switzerland and the Czech Republic in Basel.  I’ll be blogging about the tournament this summer and I hope to be as informative and entertaining as possible.

As I mentioned earlier, I spent several hours on the tournament’s website - which is quite possible as it’s packed with all kinds of info.  The site is very visually appealing and can definitely keep you interested.  You can even look at the design of every team bus as well as their fan-selected slogan.  For example, Turkey’s bus reads “Would the passion of Turkey fit into this bus?”  Interesting question.

BTW - a huge thanks to The Gaffer for the opportunity to write on this great site - I hope I do it justice.  Please send me any tips or suggestions.

Good article, and yeah I agree with you, The site is quite informative. By the way, who do you think is winning Euro 2008? Who are your dark horses?

Mascots are always a funny thing. Everybody loves to complain about them, but almost every team and every event still has one. Though I will agree Trix and Flix is a little odd.

Welcome to the site, best of luck to you.

In US, do you know which channel would telecast EURO 2008… live

Prasanna: ESPN will be broadcasting Euro 2008 live. Matches will be split mostly between ESPN and ESPN 2, but a couple of matches will end up on ABC as well. It’ll also be available online at ESPN 360 (for those of you who get that service from your ISP) and ESPN Deportes.

Actually, as it turns out, ABC is now scratched off for showing matches based on the latest press release. So throw that one out.

This is one area where us folk Stateside have an edge. I wish American sporting events didn’t constantly blare music at every momentary pause in the action and tell fans when to cheer over the jumbtron… but thank heavens we don’t have mascots for the competitions themselves. These weird abominations against nature that show up at the Olympics and the World Cup and Euro are lamer than lame. I shudder at the very thought of the Superbowl or World Series having a one off mascot (or even the World Baseball Classic for that matter).
