Wigan Athletic have unveiled their new away kit for the 2009/2010 season in honour of the famous Netherlands side from the 1978 World Cup.
Wigan’s new away kit is orange with black trim, and black shorts. Designed and manufactured by Vandanel, the new away kit celebrates the year that Wigan entered the Football League (1978) as well as the Dutch home kit from that year.
The Dutch connection at Wigan includes club captain Mario Melchiot and Daniel de Ridder. Plus, new Wigan manager Roberto Martinez is renowned for his Spanish style of football that emulates the Dutch style — lots of fluid passing of the ball on the pitch instead of the hit and hope of old English football.
“It’s a nice design and obviously players like Daniel (de Ridder) and myself will appreciate the reference it also holds to such a great team,” said Mario Melchiot. “The new manager we have certainly values the importance of keeping possession and working our way around teams so hopefully it’ll have a positive influence on us.”
The new away kit will be worn for the very first time in tonight’s pre-season friendly versus Preston North End and will be available for purchase on Thursday 13th August, two days before the Latics kick off their season away to Aston Villa.

OK, are they doing road work on the way to the road match? Does it need to be “OSHA Safety Orange”?

Pretty tenuous links as justification for homage to the Dutch National team. Horrible “hi-lighter” shade of orange.

I think this is a good kit its better than the yellow 1 ov last season

Is their alot of hunting accidents in England?

I thought they banned hunting in the countryside over there.

In my humble opinion, isn’t this a step up from the yellow away tops last season?
We have seen much worse this summer !
I agree they could mute the blaze orange. Although they should have no problem seeing who is unmarked !

Yeah I’ll never understand the yellow away shirt trend in football, never works outside of Arsenal’s away shirts last season or Brazil.

Looks like Dundee United.

If you can look past the shade of orange, the design layout itself isn’t that bad. But, the problem is… how could you ever look past that color?

Is this the first Premiership Club to don orange?
Anyway, looking forward to see Wigan winning Preston today.

When did Wigan merge with Wolves?

No, they moved to Houston and became the Dynamo
(j/k, our jerseys don’t glow in the dark.)

Thinking the same thing.

I’m all for it. The black trim looks great, and it is always better to do something different.

How can anyone overlook the absolute kit manufacturer logo overkill on this thing? Up and down the sides of the jersey and the shorts! Ghastly.
